Family pays tribute to Hailsham cyclist after hit-and-run death

Nathan Hill has been described as ‘hugely popular’ and loved by everyone who knew him.

The 51-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of a collision with a bus and unidentified vehicle which drove off at around 7pm on Thursday evening (January 30).

His family said in a statement, “Nathan was much loved by everyone who knew him. He was a hugely popular man, well known in Hailsham.

“He was generous and kind and always stopped to say hello to people. He enjoyed his job, going to his local gym, and his social life – he had many friends. He particularly enjoyed dancing and karaoke.”

Nathan worked at Tradesmith in Hailsham as a window and door maker, and previously at Abbott Joinery for 24 years, they said.

He attended Hellingly School and The Lindfield School, Eastbourne. And in 2008 he won a Skills for Life award from Sussex Downs College.

The family said, “He leaves behind his mum, dad, sister and brother, his niece and nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.”

Police say Nathan was cycling along London Road, close to the junction with Grovelands Road, when he was struck by a car, causing him to fall into the path of an oncoming bus.

Enquiries are ongoing and the car reported to be involved remains unidentified at this stage, said police.

A section of the road was closed until approximately 6.30am on Friday (January 31).

Police are still appealing for anyone with any information – in particular anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage – to come forward.
