And, in Windram Close, Horsham, a door was damaged during an attempted break-in.

A police spokesman said: “As the darker evenings are upon us and we approach the end of the year we begin to see an increase in burglaries across both East and West Sussex and find that the rural community is often the most vulnerable as they are isolated from the busy urban areas.”

Police urge people to ensure they lock all doors when going out and keep valuables out of sight.

The spokesman added: “If you’re out all day, then it is advisable to use a timer device to automatically turn lights on.

“Set your burglar alarm if you’ve got one and make sure the side gate is locked.

“Lock your shed or garage and lock your bicycle/quad bike/tools inside a secure shed or garage.”
