Investigation into pedestrian and police car collision in Brighton

The police watchdog is investigating after a police car and pedestrian were involved in a collision yesterday morning (July 17).

A Sussex Police car, which was responding to an emergency incident, was involved in the collision with a pedestrian in Bear Road, Brighton, around 7.40am on Wednesday.

The pedestrian suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Sussex Police said.

Two police officers suffered injuries, not believed to be serious.

A spokesperson for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IOPC) said: “The IOPC has launched an independent investigation following a road traffic collision involving a police car and a pedestrian.

“The collision, which took place on Bear Road, Brighton at about 7.40am Wednesday July 17, resulted in the pedestrian sustaining a serious leg injury. He was been taken to hospital.

“Two Sussex Police officers were also injured and taken to hospital.

“Sussex Police referred the incident and at about 8.40am we declared an independent investigation and deployed to the scene.”
