Joining forces to cut crime across Arun

COMMUNITY groups, local authorities and businesses have joined forces with police in a bid to cut crime across Arun this year.

Between April, 2010, and March, 2011, there was a 7.9 per cent rise in the overall number of offences committed. Extensive work has been undertaken to establish the cause, which has shown that of the 441 offences committed, many of the offenders were of Eastern European origin.

Operation Accent is a new initiative which has been set up to specifically target these offenders and Sussex Police will be working closely with partner agencies to disrupt their criminality, as well as reduce any vulnerability and improve trust and confidence.

Arun’s district commander, Chief Inspector Jane Derrick, said: “What should be stressed is that whilst this group of people are believed to be responsible for some of the increase in crime across Arun, they are not solely responsible for all of it – despite what some residents locally believe.”

Research has shown alcohol and illegal drugs are significant factors of suspects and victims.

The operation will aim to improve the lifestyle of those identified and tackle anti-social behaviour.
