5. Locked up in Sussex: These are some of the criminals jailed in November 2024
A Chichester man has been jailed for a number of domestic abuse offences. On January 8, 2024, police were called to Williams Road, Bosham shortly before 4pm to reports of a disturbance at an address. Officers attended and spoke with a woman in her 30s, who was known to Dean Cunningham. He had violently attacked her during the altercation. It was then disclosed that since April 2023, she was victim to a number of attacks from Cunningham including times where she has struggled to breathe. It was heard that Cunningham subjected the woman to over a year of physical and verbal violence, as well as controlling her everyday decisions, including the clothes she wore, medication she took and food she ate. Cunningham would always accuse her of seeing other men, which was not true. Whenever she would attempt to call the police, he would always intervene. He assaulted her on a number occasions before he was arrested following the public disturbance on January 8, 2024. While on court bail, he sent messages and threatening voice notes to withdraw her statement. He was remanded in custody in February. He was charged with intentional suffocation, actual bodily harm, perverting the course of justice and later charged with controlling and coercive behaviour. When appearing before Portsmouth Crown Court on November 1, Cunningham, 36, of Bracklesham Lane, Bracklesham pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. A man has been jailed for threatening a man with a gun and viciously assaulting him in Crawley. On August 11, police were called to a report of a stabbing near The Grand Bay, Pelham Place. The victim, Manuelito Andre suffered serious injuries to his arm and was taken to hospital. Andre claimed to officers that he had approached someone about money owed to him, who then chased him and stabbed him However, it was found out following CCTV enquiries that Andre had attended the mans location and threatened the man before he was stabbed. Andre approached a man in his 30s, threatened him with a firearm and attacked him. It was sustained attack lasting a number of minutes. He suffered minor injuries during the incident. While Andre was in hospital, he was arrested and taken to custody on August 14. He was charged and remanded into custody He pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court on September 12 and was subsequently sentenced at Lewes on October 25. Andre, 25, of no fixed address, was jailed for two years, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187. Following an investigation into Andre’s injuries, it became clear the victim did not possess a knife until they were able to grab it while being attacked, and it was deemed to be in self-defence. A drug dealer who used a taxi as a passenger to supply cocaine has been jailed. Erblind Daxha, 28, was stopped by plain-clothes officers from the Tactical Firearms Unit. They were completing patrols to assist with tackling the supply of class A drugs in Brighton and Hove. Daxha was seen acting suspiciously. When the vehicle was stopped, he tried to drop cocaine into the taxi, hidden in a small plastic egg. He denied the drugs were his, but officers found another plastic egg containing cocaine wraps in Daxha’s jacket pocket. At Lewes Crown Court on November 4 he admitted possession of a class A drug with intent to supply. The court heard how a Brighton and Hove taxi was stopped by TFU officers in Cromwell Road, Hove, on October 4. Officers saw Daxha discard the plastic egg container into the taxi. He claimed the package was not his own, but the second container was found in his pocket. Daxha later attempted to claim the items were not his and he had only picked them up because he was curious. But TFU officers had seen him acting suspiciously, using the taxi to take him from one customer to another. In total, 17 wraps of cocaine were found in the two containers. A man has been jailed for a series of planned robberies in Crawley. It was heard that Erasmus Darkwah would either find his victim or meet someone known to him in an alley way off Northgate Road and threaten them with a smashed glass bottle. On April 14, a man in his 30s used the alleyway as a shortcut when he was met with Darkwah. He stole his phone. On April 15 and May 27, Darkwah arranged to met two men in their 40s and 50s respectively via a dating app. When he met them both, he took them down the same alley off Northgate Road, threatened them with a bottle, and stole their phones. Similarly, on June 2, a man in his 20s was walking down the alley when Darkwah threatened him and demanded his phone. The victim managed to escape without handing over any property. On June 3, Darkwah, 29, of Northgate Road, Crawley was arrested and later charged with three counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery. He pleaded guilty to all four charges at Lewes Crown Court on August 15. On November 15, he was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment when he appeared before Lewes Crown Court. Photo: Sussex Police
