A drink-driver who drove the wrong way along a dual carriageway in Crawley, causing a serious head-on collision, has been jailed. Amelia King contravened the ‘no entry’ signs at the end of the A2011 Crawley Avenue eastbound exit slip, at the junction with Balcombe Road. She continued to travel along the 70mph national speed limit road in the wrong direction for approximately 1.25km, before her white Kia Rio collided with a black Nissan Leaf driven on the correct side of the road. There were no witnesses or video evidence to the crash, however several other drivers passed King and narrowly avoided a collision with her shortly beforehand. The incident occurred at about 11.59pm on April 19 and King was taken to hospital with a fractured ankle. There, she provided a sample for analysis which revealed she had no less than 92 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood in her system. The legal limit is 80 milligrams. King’s sole passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Crawley, sustained a fractured jaw, rib, arm and back, which required surgery and a significant stay in hospital. The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan, a 48-year-old woman from Horsted Keynes, sustained a fractured rib and blunt trauma to her abdomen, again resulting in significant hospital treatment. Twenty-two-year-old King, of Smallfield Road in Horley, Surrey, was summoned to court to face charges of two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving with excess alcohol. She pleaded guilty to all charges at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on October 30, and at Lewes Crown Court on November 27 she was sentenced to a total of two years and eight months’ imprisonment. She was also disqualified from driving for five years and four months, and must take an extended re-test should she wish to drive again. Photo: Sussex Police

A man has been jailed for firearm and drug offences in Brighton. Following a joint investigation by Brighton’s Community Investigation Team and the Metropolitan Police, it was found that Jahzadd Ryan was running and controlling a drug line, named ‘Major’. The line had been actively selling crack cocaine and heroin in Brighton and was linked to Ryan’s phone. Officers conducted a warrant at an address frequented by Ryan in Woolwich, London in August 2023 and he was located with two live firearms, ammunition as well as evidence of the ‘Major’ drug line. Ryan was arrested and later charged with being concerned in the supply of cocaine and heroin, two counts of possession of a firearm without a certificate, and two counts of possession of ammunition. He was also further charged with six further drug offences after being found in possession of quantities of drugs, and running the ‘Major’ drug line between October 2021 and March 2022. Ryan appeared before Lewes Crown Court on October 13, 2023 and pleaded guilty to the charges. When appearing before Lewes Crown Court on November 25, Ryan, 25, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 14 years and eight months’ imprisonment. Photo: Sussex Police

A man charged with a catalogue of serious crimes including rape, child abduction and false imprisonment has been convicted at court. Shane Gibbs, 35, of no fixed address, was found guilty of multiple offences against four women and two girls at Lewes Crown Court on November 28. Police were first made aware of Gibbs’ offending on December 24, 2023, through images of two vulnerable teenage girls in compromising sexual positions with a man. Enquiries quickly identified the man as Gibbs – also known as ‘Blue’ – and an urgent investigation was launched to locate him. Both girls later reported being raped or seriously sexually assaulted by Gibbs. During the course of these enquiries, on December 28 and 29 police received further reports of a 23-year-old woman having been raped on December 27 and a 35-year-old woman having been violently assaulted in November. Gibbs was identified as a suspect in both of these incidents. All four victims were safeguarded and offered specialist support. Gibbs was arrested in a hotel room in Portsmouth on January 4, 2024, subsequently charged and remanded in custody. While awaiting trial, two further victims were identified through ongoing enquiries. They were located and both women - aged 23 and 31 - disclosed being raped by Gibbs in December 2023. They too were given specialist support throughout the investigation and judicial process. Gibbs was subsequently charged with eight counts of rape, five counts of sexual assault by penetration, and one count each of intentional strangulation, false imprisonment and causing actual bodily harm. He denied all the charges. At Hove Crown Court on November 28, he was found guilty of all charges except one count of rape, of which he was found not guilty. Gibbs was remanded in custody to appear before Lewes Crown Court on March 14 for sentencing. Photo: Sussex Police
