Man arrested during Mid Sussex day of action

A man was arrested and 31 vehicles were checked for potential offences during a day of action involving the police in Mid Sussex last month.

A total of 22 neighbourhood police officers got together with colleagues from West Sussex Trading Standards as part of the national Rogue Traders Week on Thursday April 25.

The day involved police and trading standard officers calling on 25 households across Mid Sussex to give advice about how rogue traders operate and what you can do in order to avoid being ripped off.

Officers also used the day to stop-check around 31 vehicles for potential offences like using a mobile phone whilst driving, not wearing a seatbelt or not displaying a valid tax disc.

The day culminated in the arrest of a 27-year-old man in East Grinstead on suspicion of theft of mobile phones and handling stolen goods. He has been bailed until May 25 pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Rachel Mundy from the Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “The day proved very successful in raising awareness of rogue traders and their tactics and highlighting the customers’ entitlement to a seven day cooling off period.

“Door stickers produced by Sussex Police, West Sussex County Council and Neighbourhood Watch were also given out, stating “I don’t buy from doorstep sellers.” These are available at Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and East Grinstead police stations as well as at town council help points.

“I would like to thank the local communities for their continued support with our day of actions and of course, for the expertise and help from Trading Standards.”
