The arrested man is helping police with their inquiries, and a spokesperson said officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, confirming that ‘there is no threat to the wider public.’
Police dogs spent last night carrying out a final search of the area and, now that the coast is clear, the cordon has been lifted.
The police spokesperson said: “Thank you for your patience and understanding while we dealt with this incident.
“We’d also like to extend our thanks to the community, including staff at The Triangle leisure centre, who have assisted in the safe management of evacuated residents.”
Officers first responded to reports of a suspicious package at 1.48pm yesterday afternoon. A 100 metre cordon was established and many of the surrounding roads were closed as police tackled the incident.
