Man charged after cyclist ‘seriously injured’ in Mid Sussex

A man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and dangerous driving after a cyclist was injured in Mid Sussex.

Sussex Police said they were called to Paddockhurst Road, Turners Hill, at 4.50pm on Tuesday (April 13), following an alleged assault involving a car driver and a cyclist.

“David Francis, 28, a mechanic, of West Hoathly Road, East Grinstead, was arrested and later charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and driving a motor vehicle dangerously,” said a police spokesman.

“He appeared before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday (April 15) and was remanded in custody to next appear in court on May 13.”

In an update on May 14, a police spokesman said: “A provisional trial date has been set for September 20, 2021.”

The cyclist, a man in his 40s, had ‘significant head injuries’ and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, police said, adding that he was in a stable condition.

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward.
