The force said the quick response ensured a ‘potentially dangerous’ situation did not escalate.

The 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear and is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries, said police.

The device was not discharged. Sussex Police say it was seized and is being examined to establish exactly what it is.

Detective Inspector Mark Rosser said, “This was a professional and robust response by our two colleagues which ensured that any risk of further danger to the public was nipped in the bud.”
