Man with weapon seen in Crawley flats

Police are appealing for information after an armed man was seen in a block of flats in Crawley last night.

Armed police and a National Police Air Service helicopter were dispatched to deal with the threat in Northgate Avenue.

There was a heavy police presence in the town centre from about 6.30pm last night (Thursday, May 13).

Patrols have been upped in the area and now officers are working to find the man.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Just before 5pm on Thursday May 13, police were called to a flat in Northgate Avenue, Crawley, after a report that a man in possession of a weapon had been at the property. The weapon was shown but not used and nobody was injured.

"The occupants of the flat are safe and the building was searched by armed officers as part of enquiries to trace the man and to ensure other occupants are safe. The reason for the man's visit is not yet known.

"There is no current evidence to suggest that there is any specific threat to the local community and this is believed to be an isolated incident. Local police have increased high visibility patrols in the area to provide reassurance.

"At this time the man has not been identified and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 or via CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111, quoting serial 1110 of 13/05."
