A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “At around 12.30pm on Friday, December 9, the victim was shopping in Waitrose, Albion Way. At some point during his visit to the store his wallet, containing five bank cards and around £180 in cash were taken. He did not realise this until he left the store and returned home.”

PC Russ Watson said: “The theft has left the victim and his wife extremely upset, but luckily he realised his wallet had been stolen and managed to cancel his bank cards before they could be used.

“I would appeal to anyone who can help us identify the people in the CCTV to come forward and speak with officers. Please email [email protected] or call 101 quoting serial 793 of 09/12.

“If you do not wish to speak with police or want to provide personal details, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).

“At this time of year, many people carry larger amounts of cash than they normally would, which can make you more of a target to thieves. Separating your money into smaller amounts so it is not all in view when you pay for items is recommended, along with not keeping purses and wallets where they can be seen and easily accessed by thieves. Zip them up in an inside pocket or secure in a bag with an opening that can be worn against your body.”
