Cycling is banned in West Street and Middle Street, and officers began an operation yesterday (Thursday May 14) to raise awareness that cycling is prohibited on the roads.

PC James Munden admitted that a majority of cyclists are currently unaware of where they can and can’t ride their bikes, but said they could be fined in the future.

He said: “West Street has a TRO (traffic regulation order) which means no cycling is allowed, so we are looking at educating people to make them aware of that fact.

“In the near future we will look at starting to enforce that cycling ban and that will involve a £50 fine.

“Ninety per cent of the people I stop don’t know you can’t cycle and will apologise, get off and walk.”

He added that the local force is working alongside West Sussex County Council to improve signage.

There are small signs prohibiting cycling at either end of West Street and another at the bottom of Middle Street.

PC Munden was joined by chief inspector Howard Hodges and PCSOs Adrian Bell and Charlene Parsons for the beginning of the operation.
