Police investigate attempt to steal from vulnerable man in Crawley

Two men attempted to steal from a man with learning difficulties by asking him for his PIN numbers, police believe.

The ‘vulnerable’ man, from Horsham and aged in his late 50s, was approached by the men in Crawley at about 1.45pm on Monday (December 14).

Police said the man was walking along Ewhurst Road, just off Ifield Avenue and opposite the ambulance station, while taking a lunchtime break from his work in a nearby shop.

A gold Skoda saloon car containing two men drove up alongside him. They asked the man to get in so they could take him to his home where some maintenance work was needed urgently.

As they drove, the two men asked him about his credit cards and for the PIN numbers which he refused to give them, police said.

They took him home but left shortly afterwards as another member of the victim’s family was home. Nothing was stolen.

Both men are described as white. The passenger was 5’9”-10” with a tan, stocky, with short dark or black hair that was a bit curly, clean shaven and clean cut, with dark eyes.,He was casually dressed, wearing a black jumper and black trousers.

The driver wore a black baseball cap.

Detective sergeant Karrie Bohanna said; “We think this was attempt to steal cash or perhaps belongings from a vulnerable man.

“If you saw what happened in Ewhurst Road or have any other information, please contact us via [email protected] or call 101, quoting serial 873 of 14/12. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or at www.crimestoppers-org.uk”
