The fire caused a small amount of damage to the house and two vehicles.

Police said the owner of the property and his family were asleep upstairs in the property at the time and discovered the damage the next morning.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “The offenders have then gone to the house next door and attempted to start a fire.

“Fortunately, the fire did not take hold and burnt out before it caused too much damage.

“The damage was discovered in the morning by the victim.”

Detective Constable Paul Kelly, who is investigating the incident, said: “We do not believe that these addresses were deliberately targeted and that these were random attacks on two neighbouring premises.

“However, both victims have been left extremely distressed and upset as a result of their ordeal, particularly the family who are still extremely shaken by what has happened.

“A number of enquiries are already underway in an attempt to identify the suspects but we would still like to hear from anyone who witnessed either of the attacks, or who has any other information, to get in touch with us.”

If you witnessed either of these incidents, which are being treated as arson with intent to endanger life and arson, please email Sussex Police at [email protected] or call 101 quoting serial 269 of 10/10.

Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
