She made the comment after it was revealed police forces across the country face dozens of new performance targets set by PCCs.

Analysis reported by the BBC suggests 18 of the 41 PCCs have set targets or measures and others broader objectives.

But speaking to the County Times in Horsham today (Thursday September 19) Mrs Bourne said: “I’m not a great lover of targets, they have unforeseen consequences.”

The PCC gave an example of how targets for burglary investigations could suggest a success rate of one in five incidents.

“But that’s not could enough,” she said, “there is only one target in this case - reduce burglary.”

She echoed the words of Theresa May, Home Secretary, who last week told senior police officers they ‘have only one target - to reduce crime’.
