Police warning after five motorbike collisions in a week

With a fine Bank Holiday weekend forecast, many motorcycle riders will be taking to the road for the first time this spring and Sussex Police are asking them to look after themselves and other drivers to look out for them after five serious injuries to riders this week.

Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, from Sussex Police’s Road Policing Unit, said: “We tend to see a spike in serious injury collisions involving motorbikes around this time of year, especially on fine weekends.

“If you haven’t been out for a while, or even if you have, ride carefully and stay aware.

“Similarly, other road users need to be aware of the Think Bike! message - be mindful of riders and look carefully, especially before turning, exiting junctions or similar manouevres.

“Five riders have suffered broken bones this week in crashes at Hunston, Houghton, Fittleworth, Bognor and Rodmell, near Lewes, and every single one involved a collision with another vehicle.

“So far this year, there have been 219 people killed and seriously injured on the roads of Sussex and motorcyclists account for nearly 18% of these.”

All road users should be aware of the annual bike1066 May Day run on Monday (May 6) when up to 20,000 bikers are expected to descend on Hastings between 9am and 5pm.
