In recent weeks, prominent politicians including Home Secretary Priti Patel and policing minister Kit Malthouse both said they would call the police on neighbours who had broken the rule of six in their homes.

In a snap poll on the West Sussex County Times Facebook page, we asked people to vote yes or no. In a decisive result, 76% of voters said they would not report their neighbours to police, against 20% saying they would and 4% saying neither yes or no.

It also created a lot of discussion.

Martin Duffy said: “No I wouldn’t. Anyway, what sort of nonsense rule is it when you can have more than six people out grouse shooting, but you can’t have a children’s birthday party in someone’s garden.”

Matt Parker said he would ‘never’ report neighbours, adding: “It might be the same neighbour that has taken a parcel in for me, or helped me jump start the car on a cold morning when it wouldnt start.”

Bethany Klix said: “Never, that’s just rude and nasty...we need to stick together.”

Bringing some welcome comic relief, Simon O’Neill said: “I phoned 101 earlier... my family wouldn’t leave after I invited them to lunch 4 days ago.”
