Darren Hellowell, 41, of Markwick Terrace, St Leonards-on-Sea, was the subject of multiple calls made regarding his antisocial and intimidating behaviour over the last six months.

This was not only affecting the public, but also his neighbours. After an incident where he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, Hellowell was issued with a Community Protection Notice.

Officers began compiling a Criminal Behaviour Order application. However, they were faced with some scepticism as to whether they would be able to get their application granted by the courts. PC Grant Freeman stood firm in the opinion that they had to try, providing a witness statement detailing the impact Hellowell’s behaviour had on the community and policing.

This month, Hellowell was arrested three times in the space of three days for being drunk and disorderly. On the last occasion, Darren was also arrested for breaching his CPN.

On the 29th June 2020, the courts issued Hellowell with a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order preventing him from:

• Being drunk or consuming alcohol in any public place

• Acting or inciting others to act in an anti-social manner, that is to say, a manner that causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons.

Hellowell was also issued a £60 fine and given a community order for 18 months with an alcohol treatment order.

Prevention Sergeant Barden said: “We all agreed that everybody should feel safe in their home and for their children to be able to play safely without fear of abuse or threats of violence. This is a fantastic result for the victims, the community and for Sussex Police. This has come about due to the determination of Grant and the team to achieve a result, even when faced with doubters and uncertainty.”
