This morning, Sussex Police announced it was working with Sussex Safer Roads, Arun Police, Chichester Police and Horsham Police to target antisocial driving and riding across the county today, under the name Operation Downsway.

At around 7.30am, Andrew Griffith, MP for Arundel and South Downs, attended a briefing at Wisborough Green with Sussex police and crime commissioner Katy Bourne, chief constable Jo Shiner and district commander for Chichester and Arun Jon Carter to talk about road safety issues, especially speeding or noisy cars and bikes.

They were later joined by residents and parish councillors, who shared their concerns.

Katy Bourne also attended an officer briefing on the operation, led by PC Tom Van Der Wee, before they headed out in marked and unmarked vehicles.

The police and crime comissioner then headed out to Bury Hill with Jon Carter to see the work being put into action.

Several arrests and tickets have been issued as part of the operation.

Sussex Roads Police tweeted about one such example, pictured above. They said: "Whilst waiting in traffic and moving slowly this learner driver uses their mobile phone for sometime with us watching behind. Vehicle stopped and issued ticket.

"The driver also had two passengers that could have taken the phone but nope!"

They added that a car and two motorcycles with illegal number plates had also been stopped around the county.
