Thieves steal historic milepost from A22

Sussex Police said it is thought the milepost may have been stolen earlier this month.

Hide AdIts loss wad discovered on Friday (January 24), the force said.
“Thieves no doubt wishing to distance themselves from their crime have stolen an historic roadside milepost,” said a spokesman.
“Pointed, made of cast iron and painted white with black figures and decorations, the milepost was believed to have been one of only 9,000 still surviving nationwide.””

Hide AdPCSO Daryl Holter, Heritage Crime Officer, said mileposts have been distinctive roadside features since the early 18th century, but had sadly declined over the years.
“They are unique to the locations they stand on and are another strand to the fabric of our past,” he commented.
“Sadly many were removed or defaced during the Second World War, while others have been demolished by road-widening, collision damage or hede and verge cutting.”

Hide AdPCSO Holter added: “The posts provide a glimpse of times past and once gone can never be replaced.”
