Two schoolgirls '˜sexually assaulted' on way to school

Detectives are investigating two sexual assaults on schoolgirls in Burgess Hill yesterday.

Police say they had two reports of two teenage girls being touched by a man as they walked to school between 8am and 9am.

One of them, aged 14, was walking along Fairfield Road when a man on a bike rode past her and touched her on the bottom. He then rode off quickly, say police.

The other girl, aged 17, was walking through Fairfield Rec near West Street and Royal George Road when she was also touched on the bottom by a man on a bike.

The assaults both happened within 10 minutes of each other.

A 39-year-old man from Burgess Hill is now in custody after being arrested on suspicion of two counts of sexual assault.

Detective Sergeant Dave Morton said: “These incidents happened quite close to each other and within a very short amount of time. We are appealing to anyone who might have been in either area at the time and saw what happened.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on [email protected] quoting serial 1159 of 18/07.”
