The incident happened at William Hill in Fitzalan Road just before 9.30pm.

A man entered the bookmakers and pointed a bag which may have contained a handgun at the counter assistant, police said, and demanded money.

She refused, and the man ran out of the shop without taking anything.

There were no customers in the shop at the time, police added.

The man is described as about 6’, of medium to heavy build, wearing a black and white check lumber style jacket, a black hoody and a baseball cap with a brown peak.

Detective Sergeant Laura Diamond said; “If you were in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, please contact us via [email protected] or call us on 101 quoting serial 1448 of 14/1.

The incident comes just weeks after a man attempted to rob HSBC bank in Horsham town centre.

No weapon was seen in the attempted robbery at the West Street bank on December 9, and the attempt was also unsuccessful.

The Fitzalan Road branch of William Hill was also the target of a robbery in 2008.

A man made off with an unknown quantity of cash after robbing the bookmakers at knifepoint.
