UPDATE: Resident’s shock at Littlehampton shooting

SHOCKED residents have spoken of their horror following a shooting in Littlehampton just before daybreak today (Friday, September 30).

Residents of Peregrine Road and Horsham Road were stunned to see more than a dozen police officers, some wearing bulletproof vests, cordoning off the area, and a police helicopter circling above.

One 18-year-old, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“I was on Facebook and people on it were going mental, saying a shooting had happened down the road.

“I went out to have a look and there were police officers everywhere. They had blue tape across the roads and Land Rovers blocked each end. It was a complete shock.”

Officers were initially called to Horsham Road, at around 6.40am, after a man was reported to be holding, what is believed to be, a firearm, at a house in Peregrine Road.

Witnesses described hearing two quick gunshots echo through the streets, at approximately 7.30am.

Shortly afterwards, a Kent and Sussex Air Ambulance landed in the middle of Horsham Road, opposite the junction of Peregrine Road.

Just after 9am a 63-year-old Littlehampton man was taken away from the property, by paramedics, and placed into the helicopter.

He was then flown to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, with, what police believe to be, serious gunshot wounds.

Police will be holding a press briefing about the shooting, at Littlehampton police station’s, Major Incident Suite, in East Street, later this afternoon. We will be carrying a further update on this website following the briefing.
