Sergeant Allan Philip of Mid Sussex Police said over the past few weeks a number of vans have been broken into using various means, including drilling into locks to gain entry. Many incidents happened overnight.

He told the Middy: “The tools stolen amount to thousands of pounds and in many cases can shut down honest hard working peoples livelihoods.

“While it is appreciated that not all tools can be removed from vehicles overnight, I would advise to remove the more expensive ones including larger electrical and fuel items.

“It may also be worth looking into attaching trackers to some items in the hope that they could be found if stolen. Photographing tools, especially ones with specific marks or damage also helps police identify them should they be found.”

Sgt Philip urged builders to make sure that their alarm system on their vehicle is up to date and working.

He said if tools are only accessible via rear doors to the van, builders should consider parking the van up against a wall or hard standing to prevent entry.

Making good use of up to date CCTV systems that can provide good night vision also aids police with their enquiries, he said.

He added: “Of course if you can garage your van or vehicle overnight, this will also add another level of security.

“Please also be on your guard if anyone tries to sell you items of this nature on an ad hoc basis, as this usually means that they have been acquired dishonestly.

“If you have any information that can help police or you have been the victim of a crime of this nature and have not reported as yet, please call Sussex Police on 101 or email by going to www.sussex.police.uk.

“If the crime is on progress please dial 999.”
