Woman, 24, raped in Brighton city centre

Detectives have sealed off a road in Brighton after reports of a rape this morning (January 15).

Police were on the scene outside Marwood Coffeehouse on Ship Street.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Police are investigating after a 24-year-old woman was raped in Ship Street, Brighton, during the early hours of Tuesday (15 January). The suspect is believed to be known to the victim.”

Detective Sergeant Leon Ryan said: “Our enquiries are at an early stage and we are still trying to establish the full circumstances. Forensic tests have been taking place and this has necessitated the temporary closure of Ship Street. This appears to be an isolated incident.”

A statement on the Marwood Bar & Coffeehouse Facebook page said: “To those who have been confused by our unexpected closure this morning, we are only closed for now as we help police with an investigation unrelated to our business. Thanks to those who sent messages of concern, all staff are absolutely okay and will let you know when we reopen.”

Anyone with information that may assist detectives is asked to report details online or phone 101, quoting serial 141 of 15/01.
