On Monday afternoon, Sussex Police said 'regular patrols' were being conducted in the area, whilst the parish council urged residents to avoid confrontation with the travellers.

In a message to residents on social media, they wrote: "Needless to say, the advice to local residents is always not to approach a group of travellers or get involved in a debate or argument with them or to take any 'direct action'; please always leave all contact with the group to the relevant authorities.

"It is even more important in the current circumstances and where social-distancing is paramount, as approaching any groups of people not only puts themselves but also the travellers at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

"This advice also applies to people using the playing field who should keep well away from the area where the vehicles are parked."
