As the highest town in Wealden, and the first generally to be hit by snow, Crowborough now faces a battle over replacing its vital grit bins.
There are 33 grit bins in the town which have always been supplied and filled by East Sussex County Council. But inevitably some of them get broken.
As part of a cost-cutting exercise, County decided not to replace broken bins, suggesting local communities could do so - in fact some already do. But maintenance is beyond the budget of many small groups and now members of Crowborough Town Council’s environment committee have decided it is not their policy either. Members were aggrieved they were expected to absorb costs that were the County’s responsibility.
