Crowborough golf charity weekend match

Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, last weekend, raised over £7,000 to be split equally between the local Grove Park School and Sussex Air Ambulance.

The occasion was the Club Captain’s Weekend, one of the busiest weekends in the club’s calendar.

The event started on Friday, June 28, with a men’s Ryesomes Stableford competition played in damp conditions which did not detract from the enjoyment of the competition. The competition was followed by a lunch and prizes were presented to Ron Martin and Andrew Hunter who came in with a very good score of 44 points to claim first prize.

In the late afternoon a Junior Fun Golf competition was held over 12 holes. This was played in teams of three with the best two scores to count on each hole and the winning team was Sam Sales, Laird Shepherd and Tom Levy. Saturday dawned a much better day weatherwise and an eighteen hole Stableford competition, open to all, was played in glorious sunshine. The Club Captain, Richard Bennett, generously provided a half-way house at the ninth where members were treated to hot dogs, burgers, cakes, fruit and most importantly, beers, wines and Pimms.

After the half-way house some scores deteriorated depending upon the level of Pimms consumption but the men’s prizes were won by Chris Dines in first place with 39 points just beating Simon Begg on countback, also with 39 points. In third place was Adam Palmer with 38 points.

The Ladies prize was won by past Lady Captain, Marianne Watt with 36 points beating, on countback, Melanie Bond, also with 36 points. In third place was Lindsay Young with 33 points. The Juniors competition was won by Harry Sansbury with 33 points followed closely behind in second place by Daniel Ovenden with 31 points. Elliot Waylen, on countback, was in third place with 30 Points. The Past Captain’s trophy was won by Joe Sippetts with 35 points.

The Captain also provided prizes for both men and ladies for nearest the pin and longest drive competitions.

The fun and festivities continued into Sunday with the men’s Fourball Better Ball Competition which was won by Andrew Spencer and Andre Meyer with an excellent score of 43 points. In second place were Russell Walters and Mathew Bunch with 42 points closely followed by Elliott Bowles and Chris Manser with 41 points.
