Community leaders and councillors were guests of honour at the civic re-opening of the Crowborough Leisure Centre last week.

District Council leader Cllr Brian Redman joined Crowborough mayor Cllr Peter Cowie and Freedom Leisure managing director Ivan Horsfall-Taylor when the centre re-opened its doors after extensive refurbishment. The ambitious £3.2 million project began in January and developments have taken place in phases so it’s stayed open to members and customers while work was going on.

A new customer service area combines the centre’s reception and cafe. Members can swipe their cards through turnstiles for quick access and studio class users can use a new fast track machine to collect tickets and avoid queueing. Customers can be greeted by a member of staff or go straight to the Freedom Cafe to enjoy a Costa coffee, relax and use free WiFi.

The newly-tiled pool has a redeveloped viewing area and balcony. New poolside changing rooms include two larger cubicles and a group change area so parents and carers have easy access. A new sauna and steam room have been incorporated into the pool area.

The new gym now has state-of-the-art equipment including a 20 metre sprint track, functional rig with boxing, power rack and gymnastics features. Extra CV equipment includes stairmills and disabled friendly bikes. It aims to have the feel of a private health club but affordability and accessibility of a community leisure centre.

Two new exercise studios have been added. Alongside these the first floor changing rooms have been renovated throughout.

Cllr Claire Dowling, Wealden’s public health cabinet member, said: “This was an ambitious project but I’m pleased to see all our plans have come together really well and the centre now offers superb facilities in beautifully designed, well thought-out surroundings. I hope these improvements will encourage more people to keep active over the winter months. The community here in Crowborough will be able toenjoy top quality fitness facilities for many years to come.”
