Crowds gather across Midhurst and Petworth on Remembrance Sunday

Crowds gathered at Petworth and Midhurst war memorials on Remembrance Sunday to lay wreaths and hold two minutes silence.

At Midhurst those attending included Neil Hart Deputy Lieutenant of West Sussex, Captain Michael Gordon Lennox, president of the Midhurst Royal British Legion (RBL) and Brigadier Arthur Douglas-Nugent, chairman of the Midhurst RBL poppy appeal. The service was conducted by The Rev Dave Willis.

At Petworth the Remembrance parade was led by Petworth Town Band, and marshalled by Col Paul Bibbey, chairman of the Petworth branch RBL. Canon Mark Gilbert conducted the service and the Roll of Honour was read by Gerald Webb, president of the Petworth RBL Club. The Kohima Epitaph was said by Lewis Golden, president of Petworth RBL.

Seaford College’s first cohort at Lavington Park from 1946 attended a 70th Reunion organised by 1949 school captain John Dawes, at Seaford’s Remembrance Service.

Midhurst Rother College held two minutes silence on Friday. Head Boy, George Caws, and Head Girl, Erin Collins, laid a wreath at the memorial in the main college building.

There was a ‘Recital of Remembrance’ at Midhurst Parish Church on Saturday evening with speeches from Agincourt to Iraq, Kindertransport to the Falklands as well as the first and second world wars The Kindertransport children were all from the Sunday School and the Ignite youth group.
