Crowds ignore warning to stay away from Bonfire

Despite repeated warnings that Lewes could become crowd-locked, some 65,000 people packed into the narrow streets of the town centre for the annual November 5 celebrations.

The grand united procession was 40 minutes late because the crowds had held up earlier processions.

A confirmed 30,000 people came in by train alone.

Four hundred police officers were on duty, as well as extra fire crews and paramedics.

Amazingly, given the size of the crowds, there was little in the way of disturbance.

A man was stabbed in the Pells area and taken to hospital but this was not bonfire-related. Police are making enquiries.

Another man, trying to get a good view of the processions, fell off a lamp post near the magistrates court and was taken to hospital with injuries.

Only three people in all required hospital treatment, but more than 100 were treated by St John Ambulance for bangs and bruises.
