Crowning glory for kings and queens in Middleton

A big crowd watched two May queens and kings being crowned in Middleton.

The royalty, with their supporting princes and princesses, had led a large procession from the Bishop Tufnell schools along Middleton Road to the traditional May fair in Shrubbs Field.

A queen and king had been chosen from each of the infant and junior schools.

The infant school's choice was Louise Last, six, and Alex Cornell, five.

From the junior school, Isaac Baldwin, eight, and Georgia Crisp-Mills, ten, were selected. They rode in open cars at the head of the parade on Monday.

They also walked around the arena with their princes, princesses and attendants in front of proud parents and friends.

Father William Marston, the vicar of St Nicholas Church in Middleton, was delighted by the event's success.

He said: "It was wonderful to welcome so many members of the community to the fair.

"We all had a great deal of fun. Many thanks to everyone who supported us."

An interesting display of photographs and historic documents in the church, next to Shrubbs Field, marked its 160th birthday.

Local historian Winifred Abbott created the exhibition to remind visitors the Victorian building, enlarged in 2007, was put up in 1849 to replace a much older church swept away by the sea 12 years earlier.

The fair's main organisers, Mike and Margaret Wadley, were delighted with the enthusiastic attendance and were grateful for the support of those who took part as well as businesses who backed the occasion.
