Cubs have their say on Yapton's future

Young people in Yapton have been having their say about how they would like to see the village develop over the next ten years.

Members of 1st Yapton and Ford Cubs thought about the environment, housing, business and jobs, health, education, emergency facilities and infrastructure.

Club leader Katrina McAnaspie collected responses by getting the youngsters to form three areas in the scout hut.

Those on one side agreed with a statement. Those on the other side disagreed and those who were undecided congregated in the middle of the floor.

They strongly stated they wanted farm fields to be left undeveloped and they were unanimous in wanting the natural habitats in and around Yapton to be preserved for future generations. They also believed young people would leave the village without more jobs.

Ms McAnaspie said: “It was a real treat for the children to be involved. They enjoyed the game and thought hard about each question and how it affected them and their surroundings.”

The cubs, aged eight to ten, were working towards their community challenge badge by discussing the Yapton neighbourhood plan.

This is being compiled by villagers with the support of Yapton Parish Council.

Andy Faulkner, a joint chairman of the Yapton neighbourhood plan group, said: “We had a great time meeting the cubs and we’d like to thank them for their ideas. We will take them on board.”
