Cubs join in national centenary launch in London

YOUNG Scouts from South Bersted and Bury were involved in the national launch for the Cubs centenary.

Four members of 1st South Bersted and 1st Bury were chosen to represent West Sussex at the launch at London Zoo on Saturday.

To coincide with the national event, West Sussex Scouts organised a party at the Out of Bounds centre in Angmering.

Members from five groups attended the party, including 1st Selsey, 1st Wesbourne, 1st Beeding and Bramber, and two Crawley Cub packs.

Sarah Friend, county administrator, said: “Cubalicious is the new word Cub Scouts from across West Sussex are using to describe the West Sussex Cub100 launch on Saturday.

“There were 20 Cub Scouts representing packs from across West Sussex, joined together for a day of activities and fun to start the Year of Adventure celebrations of 100 years of Cub Scouting.”

After a climbing session, the Cubs had lunch and a slice of birthday cake. Cubs and leaders were presented with centenary scarves as a memento of the day.

County commissioner Irene Orford said: “As a former Cub Scout leader myself, I know that without adult volunteers like those who run our pack nights every week, many of these young people wouldn’t have the opportunity to experience the sense of achievement that Cub Scouting gives them.

“Scouting is really great because they get to share these special memories with so many friends.”

Cub Scouting creates opportunities for young people to develop social skills, independence and form friendships.

The centenary, called Cubs 100, will involve local and national events to showcase the fun, excitement and adventure provided by Scouting.

The section was formed on December, 16, 1916, and originally called Wolf Cubs. There are now 150,000 Cub Scouts across the UK, including 3,000 in West Sussex.
