A proposal by Worthing Borough Council to start charging people to park at the Gardens was met with widespread opposition.

Donna Lewington, manager of the Highdown Tea Room, said: “All our customers are absolutely thrilled it’s not going to happen because they would have gone elsewhere. It would have had a detrimental affect.”

The proposal consisted of charging cars £1 to park for the day, £3 for vans and £10 for lorries.

Worthing cabinet member for the environment Cllr Clive Roberts said: “Parking is one of my responsibilities.

“It was a proposal I was putting out there which was met with displeasure.

“The grants from central government are cut and cut and cut so we have to look where we can make cuts.”
