Customs seize 1m cigarettes

CUSTOMS officers have seized another huge haul of contraband cigarettes at Newhaven Harbour.

Less than a fortnight after 2.5 million cigarettes were found during a routine check more than a million were discovered hidden inside panels of specially modified lorry doors on Friday.

The lorry was stopped after it left the Transmanche cross-Channel ferry from Dieppe. An Customs and Excise spokeswoman said: 'A Portuguese lorry driver was arrested and later released on bail. The cigarettes, all Superkings, have an estimated revenue evasion figure of 200,000.'

During the previous haul a Portuguese man was also arrested. The spokeswoman said: 'We have no evidence that they are linked, but there are very strong similarities. Customs enquiries are continuing.'

Neither of the two men have been charged.
