The Challenge is a competition between organisations to see which can get the most staff to try riding a bike and will run from 1-31 March.

There is a vibrant cycling community in Brighton & Hove and the Challenge will bring together its members to communicate the joys and benefits of riding a bike to those who don’t yet ride.

The aim is to get as many people as possible to ride a bike and log their trip. 23 organisations and 132 people have registered online since the site launched on January 11.

Organisations will compete to get the highest proportion of their staff to ride for just ten minutes – an achievable goal that is also long enough for participants to experience the physical and psychological benefits of riding a bike.

It’s free for organisations and individuals to take part and there are six size categories for organisations, as well individual prizes. Everyone who logs a ride before the end of March will go into the draw for a trip to Canada or Croatia, plus there are cinema tickets for encouragers and new riders and lots of prize to be announced before March.

Cllr Gill Mitchell, Chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee, said: “Cycling is not only fun but it’s also a wonderful mode of sustainable transport and a great way to do exercise.
