Councillors have agreed the first of two decisions to enable lawful authority to be given to cycling between Outram Road and the private Beach Estate.

The agreement last week needs to be ratified by all members of Arun District Council next month. If that happens, a date will be set by the council’s cabinet member for environmental services, Cllr Terence Chapman, for cycling to be permitted.

Council outdoor services manager, Calvin Baylis, told Arun’s environmental services and community development working group a survey last September showed 88 per cent of the 866 responses backed cycling.

“The council has allowed cycling on other parts of the promenade in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton,” he said. “This appears to have worked well with no formal complaints being received since their introduction.

“Enforcement of the current restriction is not possible as there is no permanent staff resources based on Felpham promenade.”

A report by cycle charity Sustrans showed shared use was possible on Felpham seafront but signs were needed in the narrow sections. Walkers would have priority.
