Cyclists given security warning

Cyclists around Bognor Regis have been urged to get their bikes protected against crime.

Police officers in the town are promoting the benefits of marking the two-wheelers and registering them on to a national property database.

Sergeant Danny West, of Bognor police station, said bikes were fun and a cheap way to keep fit. But they could also make easy targets for thieves.

"Unfortunately, bikes are expensive items which can often be targeted by opportunist thieves.

"I want to encourage cyclists to call into their local police station with their bikes.

"Security marking takes just a few minutes and may well protect a bike from being the next one stolen," he said.

The national property database, Immobilise, can be used to register any item which has an individual serial number.

"Registration can really make the difference," stated Sgt West. "If the ownership of property cannot be proved, we are frequently forced to return items which we strongly believe are stolen back to the suspects we have arrested."

The database can be found at the www.immobilise.com website. Cycle marking is available from Bognor police station during its front counter opening hours.
