Dad slates council over baby facilities in toilets

A disgruntled father has slated Rother District Council for the lack of baby changing facilities available to men in Bexhill.

Christopher Selkirk, who lives in Sidley, was in Bexhill with his 16-week old daughter Shelby when he needed somewhere to change her nappy.

Christopher said the only place available in Bexhill is at Devonshire Square, which has baby changing facilities in both the men's and women's public toilets.

However, when he saw the state of the facilities in the men's loos he changed his mind.

Christopher, 60, said: "It smells like holy Heaven in there. The baby changing facilities are disgusting, the baby tray is a filthy grey colour and I would never put my baby on there to change her.

"I tried to use the facilities in the ladies' toilets '“ which are immaculate - but a woman complained so I ended up changing Shelby in the street, which I shouldn't have to do.

"I've been able to use the facilities in a local pub before but this was early in the morning and they weren't open."

Christopher said he's complained to the council three times now but said "they've not taken any notice".

He added: "The council needs to realise that men do take their children out as well as women. There are no other toilets in the town now.

"The toilets at Devonshire Square should be manned and then they would be clean and tidy all day. I've just found out that the baby changing facilities in the ladies' toilets are brand new."

Rother District Council's head of amenities Madeleine Gorman said: "We are sorry that the gentleman concerned felt the baby change facilities in this toilet were unclean.

"When this was reported to the council we immediately conducted an inspection of the site, however the toilets and changing facilities were found to be of a good standard.

"We take the matter of cleanliness in our public conveniences seriously and they are regularly checked and cleaned to make sure they reach the standards both the council and members of the public would expect."
