Daisy attains her majority on election day

NINFIELD teenager Daisy Bower celebrated her 18th birthday last Thursday, May 5, by voting in the Wealden district council elections for the first time.

She was at the village’s polling station by 9am, where she was met by Conservative candidate Pam Doodes who was intrigued to learn of the day’s special significance for Daisy (pictured).

After casting her vote, Daisy emerged to be warmly greeted by her father Graeme, Pam and several villages who congratulated her on her personal milestone.

Pam said: “The chances of an 18th Birthday falling on Election Day must be very slim. I was delighted when Daisy told me she was going to vote and very pleased to be able to greet her when she arrived.”

Pam added: “Of course, it was a secret ballot and I do not know how Daisy voted as I did not ask her. I am just very pleased she thought it sufficiently important to vote on her birthday.”

Following the ballot, Pam Doodes was re-elected to Wealden District Council, representing the Ninfield and Hooe with Wartling Ward.

She polled 764 votes, beating Labour candidate Ben Sturgess, who took 172 votes, in a straight fight. Turnout in the ward was 49.62 per cent.

Overall, Wealden remained in Tory control, with 47 Conservative councillors elected, alongside five independents and three Liberal Democrats.

District-wide, turnout was 49.54 per cent.

And the Alternative Voting result was just as decisive as Rother’s, with 74 per cent voting No, compared to just 26 per cent voting Yes.
