DANGER ROAD TO BE MADE SAFER

MEASURES to make the A272 safer are planned by East Sussex County Council following a series of crashes.

Problems came to a head when Bridget Pullan, 68, of Nutley, suffered a fractured pelvis in an alleged hit-and-run incident last October.

The county council has been working with Fletching Parish Council and has agreed several measures:

pVehicle activated signs on each approach;

pContrasting coloured anti-skid surface to highlight the Down Street/Golf Club Lane junction;

pArrange for overhanging hedges to be trimmed back to improve visibility;

pLocal direction signs will be adjusted to reduce turning movements at the Golf Club Lane junction.

In the long term the council will consider making Golf Club Lane one-way southbound from the A272 to the entrance of the club.

The county council will work with the parish council to identify lengths of verge that could be made into pavements to allow people to walk and to discourage short car journeys. These will be added to the waiting list of pavement requests the county council holds.

They will consider reinstating double white lines to stop overtaking along part of the A272.

The speed limit between Haywards Heath and Maresfield will be reviewed when the new government guidance on speed limits is available later this year.

The county council will also consider repositioning the direction signs for the Piltdown crossroads situated east of the Fletching turn to improve visibility from the junction.

Cllr Matthew Lockhead, lead member for transport and environment said: 'It has been extremely helpful for us to have been working closely with the parish council who presented us with a petition. I am confident we have come up with the right set of safety measures.'
