Danger to pets on beach

A BEXHILL family reacted with concern after their pet dog almost swallowed a fishing lure found on the beach.

Jackie Thurley, of Magdalen Road, and young daughter Jessica were walking their dog just off Marina, when it found the lure, complete with large hook, on the pebbles.

Jackie managed to snatch the offending item away from family pet 'Ernie' before he had time to put it in his mouth.

Now she wants action taken to stop such potentially dangerous items from being left on the beachfront.

Jackie said: "I've seen fisherman use worms and things but never these and it seems a bit much.

"We were just walking along the beach on Saturday as we often do when the dog found it.

I've never seen anything like it before, luckily we stopped the dog before he ripped his insides to bits.

"It would be interesting to know if things this dangerous are often found on the beach, we took it away (the lure) in case other people didn't notice it."

Rother Coastal control officer, Patrick Meyer, said: "We have the beach cleaner going through every morning until October and they will do their best to clean everything they can. Unfortunately if the tide is up and it's below the water they are not going to see it. Things getting washed up are a natural event.

"However, people who fish should be knowledgeable enough to know that if they lose a large lure then they should come and inform us here at the beach office and we can keep a look out for it."
