‘Dangerous pavements not a problem’

Rye councillors are increasingly concerned about the state of the footway opposite the Horizon Club in Ferry Road.

But East Sussex County Council’s highways department claims there is not a problem.

In a letter to Rye Town Council clerk Richard Farhall, senior highways technician Vanessa Anscombe said: “Ferry Road has been checked by the highway engineer and while there are some damaged slabs at this location there is nothing out of the standard deemed to be acceptable by this authority.

“All highways that are maintained at public expense are inspected on a regular basis and repairs are carried out when necessary according to our maintenance plan.

“With reference to parking on the footway, that is a matter for local police to deal with as they are the enforcing authority.”

The issues comes at a time when there is growing concern about the state of Rye’s pavements in the Station Approach and Cinque Ports Street area.

The pedestrian crossing near Station Approach is in a poor state and cracked and high kerbs have resulted in a number of elderly people falling and injuring themselves,

Rye councillor Bernardine Fiddimore said: “Some of the pavements are in a terrible state and have become dangerous. Action needs to be taken.”

East Sussex County Council have been working to repair damaged sections of Rye’s cobbled streets.
