Chloe Humphrey’s family has been campaigning since January for her to have an operation on her legs at the Frenchay Hospital, in Bristol.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was 18 months old, she has always had difficulty walking.

Her grandmother Lesley said the news had been exciting, but also quite scary.

“You can imagine our feet haven’t really touched the ground,” she said.

“Chloe is thrilled to bits but understandably it’s come up and slapped her in the face.”

She added the fundraising was going amazingly well.

“This whole process has given her such a boost,” she said. “She’s grown from a shy teenager – she’s somebody who can do public speaking and talk on the radio.

“That’s because the response she’s had has been so positive.

“This truly has been an uplifting experience.”

She thanked everyone in the area for their support throughout the campaign.

The operation date has been set for May 7.

She said the fundraising needed to be completed by the end of May to ensure Chloe gets the physiotherapy she needs afterwards at home.

“Obviously we’ve got to go flat-out now,” she said.

As of March 18, the amount raised stood at £16,452.44, according to Chloe’s fundraising website.

The Chichester College pupil is a keen wheelchair basketball player, and plays for the Littlehampton Tornadoes.

Events so far to raise money have included a sponsored zumbathon and a karaoke night.

A major event coming up in Chichester to continue raising money is an art auction, taking place in the Assembly Rooms, North Street. The auctioneer will be television actor Christopher Timothy.

Lesley said there would be ‘something for everybody’.

“A lot of local artists have come forward,” she said.

The auction takes place on Thursday, April 4. A preview of the pieces on sale takes place between 11am–1pm, and the auction itself begins at 1pm. Mayor of Chichester Anne Scicluna will attend.
