Katie Overy and her best friend, ex-Observer photographer Sam Potter, together with other friends and family, are taking part in the race on September 6 in aid of St Michael’s Hospice and in honour of Steve Overy.

Mr Overy, 65, passed away peacefully at his home in Whatlington Road, Battle, in December, 2012, after a short battle with cancer.

He moved to Battle permanently in 1982 and threw himself into life in the town, being an active member of several organisations, including Battle Muffin Club, the Battle Royal British Legion, Masonic Lodges both in Sussex and London and also serving as a town councillor.

Katie, who now lives in Dubai, said: “My dad was a very loved member of the community and we sadly lost him after a five-month battle with cancer.

“Sam and I have been friends since we were three and therefore she has been very close with my family too. She messaged me a few weeks ago saying she was thinking about running the BBB 10k in September in memory of my dad.

“St Michael’s Hospice’s Hospice at Home nurses were truly amazing during my father’s final few weeks at home. I would have chosen the hospice regardless, but given the latest fire, I know it needs all the help it can get.

“Sam and I are not runners. This will be her first 10k and my second. We are not concerned about times. We just want to finish it. I’m pretty scared as we don’t have hills in Dubai, so Powdermill Lane will not be kind.

“We are lucky that many of our friends and family are running with us. Our team is called SGO1, my dad’s practically famous number plate.”

Katie has more than £700 in sponsorship so far and is aiming to raise £1,000.
