Dave's baked beans ordeal for Children in Need

EARS pricked up in the supermarket when Dave Farr announced he'd had a really saucy idea for a Children in Need fund-raiser.

But some of the more lurid imaginations at Tesco's Churchwood Drive store were a little disappointed when 44-year-old Mr Farr revealed that the sauce involved was contained in 300 cans of the superstore's own-brand baked beans.

Saucy it was, though, as the plucky night manager laboriously opened the cans, deposited them into a bath and immersed himself, fully clothed for a staggering 11 hours - without stepping out even once for the toilet.

And his dedication to the BBC TV charity event has bean repaid with 590 raised via sponsorship from store staff.

Colleague Lesley Blackman told the Observer: "He's a bit of a hero. He just had to sit there and endure every baked bean joke people could throw at him from eight in the morning to seven in the evening."

The baked bean adventure brought the store's CIN total to 2,946 - helping the future look brighter for needy children - and orange for Mr Farr!
