David Cameron and porcine pal blown up at Battle Bonfire

The town centre was packed out with firework fans from Battle and beyond coming to witness the spectacle on Saturday night (November 7).

Following the torchlit procession, which featured many visiting bonfire societies and drumming groups, it was time to blow up the effigy - one of the highlights of the night.

This year’s creation depicted David Cameron in a VW camper van - a nod towards the recent emissions scandal - being driven by a pig.

This follows the recent allegations about the Prime Minister’s close experience of the swine kind while at university.

Matt Southam, press and publicity officer for the Battel Bonfire Boyes, said: “It was Cameron going away with a pig - there was a slightly adult theme to that one!”

The evening drew to a close with a spectacular fireworks display.

Matt said: “Overall we had a really good night, from our perspective.

“It stayed dry for the children’s procession in the day time, which was well supported.

“We had quite a few people dressed up and joining the Rubbish Drummers down the High Street.

“We did have rain through the day, which made us all a bit damp setting up, but it cleared in the late afternoon.”

Due to the rain, the bonfire on the Abbey Green was exceptionally smokey, resulting in a few stinging eyes.

But the South East Coast Ambulance Service reported there were no serious injuries on the night.

A charity collection took place on the night, with the final total yet to be totted up.

All the money raised will go to local good causes.
