Day of family events to mark Refugee Week

The event, Connect, takes place on Saturday (July 1), from 11am to 4pm at the Brighton Dome Café-bar.

There will be kite making workshops, an opportunity to learn the art of batik and table tennis.

A mini Refugees Welcome parade organised by Hummingbird Project will launch the event, with participants meeting in Pelham Square Gardens at 10am, and making their way through the North Laine to Brighton Dome. The theme is Forest Carnival, inspired by The Hummingbird and the Forest Fire a story told by Kenyan environmentalist Dr Wangari Maathai.

There will be live music and food from the Sussex Syrian community, including a performance from poet and oud player Bashir Al Gammar, and Bhá’í storytelling with Farah Mohebati.

Visitors can learn to play the oud and qanun (Syrian instruments) and make your own puppet to perform in a puppet show.

Gil Mualem-Doron's provocative replacement for the Union Flag will also be on show. It is a collage of traditional fabric designs of former colonies and refugees' and migrants' home countries. Visitors can take part in a photoshoot with The New Union Project. Gil Mualem-Doron is an artist, researcher and a community facilitator, as well as the founder of SEAS – Socially Engaged Art Salon in Brighton.
